One of our objectives is to provide emergency backup communication support to Christiana Care Health System. Christiana Care Health System serves more than a million people throughout Delaware and neighboring areas of southeastern Pennsylvania, the Eastern Shore of Maryland and southern New Jersey.

There are two main hospitals that we support.  Chriatiana Hospital, located in Newark, DE and Wilmington Hospital, located in nothern Wilmington, DE.  Both hospital have fully equpied radio stations utilizing HF, VHF, UHF and digitals capabilities.

HRT Membership Requierments

Anyone with a valid Amateur Radio license and a desire to help others is welcome to join CARES. Since you will be located on Christiana Care property acting as a volunteer you will first need to complete some steps required for all volunteers. This includes an interview and attendance at a volunteer class. More information about this is detailed in the volunteer packet. For more information and to answer some questions that have been asked of us, please see the frequently asked questions below.

What is the reason for the volunteer class? The purpose of the volunteer class is to provide you training on the hospital environment, what to do in case of fire, what overhead announcments you will hear, confidentiality, etc.

Why do I need a picture ID? Even though the public has access to the hospital when visiting or receiving patient care, there are areas that are secure and not open to the public that you will need to access. Since security is always a concern, it is important that you have a badge that identifies you as a volunteer. During emergencies, security is even more important, especially at a trauma center where there would be much more activity.

Why do I need to join, can't you just call for volunteers on a local repeater if an emergency arises? In the event of an emergency it would be unfair to ask someone to report to a location that they have never been and ask them to perform a function that they never practiced for. Even something as basic as where the command center is located would be difficult to communicate at the time an emergency arises. Having trained volunteers allows us to plan and prepare for certain scenarios.

Are there minimum participation hours required.? NO. There are no minimum hours required for participation. Even though there are minimum hours for other Christiana Care volunteers, there is no minimum for the ARES group. We are trying to recruit as many Amateur Radio Operators as possible that can volunteer when then can and participate in on air nets, emergency drills and group meetings. The current Christiana Care volunteer packet mentions minimum hours and this has caused some confusion. details.Anyone interested in joining our team can send an e-mail message to CARES at cares@christianacare.org. Once your e-mail is received you will be contacted and a volunteer packet will be mailed to you. This packet contains more information on volunteering for Christiana Care and provides other information necessary for volunteering in an health care environment.
